Sunday Blog: Infinite Reward

God, Sunday Blog, Faith

Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have proven to be two of the best investors in history. They have mastered the art of risk and reward when it comes to investing in companies. One example that Charlie uses to describe their philosophy of risk is:

Imagine that you suddenly experience chest pains. You now have a choice to either take the risk of waiting to see what happens, or you can go to the doctor to make sure there isn’t an underlying heart issue. From a risk standpoint, there is a disproportionate reward/risk possibility in this decision. The potential reward of saving a little time pails in comparison to the tremendous risk of experiencing a potentially life-threatening heart problem. The obvious choice would be to go get it checked out. They view investing the same way, they will never take a risk where the potential reward is small but the possible loss is tremendous. They patiently seek investments that offer the opposite. They only make investments where the potential reward is huge and the risk is very small.

I believe the same principle can be applied to your faith and eternal future. In John 14:6, Jesus said, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. The reward of believing in Jesus has the potential to be infinitely huge. From an eternal perspective, it could be the only earthly decision that actually matters. The associated risk of believing in Jesus and it not be true, would simply mean that you were wrong. I challenge you to think about weighing the risk of eternal salvation and a relationship with the almighty God versus the risk of just being wrong. As C.S. Lewis said, Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.
